First Time Shooting Expired Film

First Time Shooting Expired Film

This last week I decided to try shooting some expired film. I hadn't previously because I didn't really want to spend the money developing something that may not work. But I decided just to go for it. My mom had found a roll of Kodak Max that had to be about 10 years old at least.

I threw it in my camera, set my compensation to +1 stop and went out shooting. These are some of the shots I got with a little bit of editing.

These images are the best results I got. With the above images I got fairly decent sharpness, The color was fairly easily correctable, and the dynamic range was pretty well intact. With all the images there was somewhat of a green hue to them. Not impossible to remove, but definitely noticeable.

Here are some of my worse results.

These images were extremely grainy to the point where the edges became soft. The picture of the flowers above is very mushy. The color was harder to manage. You can see the green cast in the hillside on the second picture. There are plenty more like this but I felt these were the clearest examples.

If you try this you may have better results, or more interesting. That is the fun is not knowing how it will turn out. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it is a dud.
